'Supreme Court upholds reservations for Arunthathiyar, the verdict has motivated us more' - DMK chief MK Stalin

Coimbatore: "The ruling of the Supreme Court upholding the reservation of the Arunthathiyar community has motivated us more", stated the DMK President M.K. Stalin.

Coimbatore: "The ruling of the Supreme Court upholding the reservation of the Arunthathiyar community has motivated us more", stated the DMK President M.K. Stalin.

In a notice released regarding this, he said, " The five-member Constitution bench of the Supreme Court has ruled that the Government has the power to give 3% internal reservation to the Arunthathiyar community. It is a great victory to the social justice policy of the DMK and the efforts of Kalaignar. The DMK is an organisation that works with the thought of social justice whether or not they are in power.

On June 7, 1971, the reservation for the SCs was raised from 16% to 18% by Kalaignar. Further, on June 22, 1990, 18% reservation was given for the SCs and a separate 1% that was provided to the STs was raised to 3.9% by him.

Along with the BC and MBC reservations, TN stays on the top with 69% reservation. On January 23, 2008 a decision was made for internal reservation for the socio-economically lower community of Arundhathiyar by the Karunanidhi government.

On November 27, 2008, 3% reservations for Arunthathiyar in education and employment, was passed in the assembly by the DMK government. As the Minister for Municipal Administration I read Kalignar's speech for the bill at the assembly. On April 29, 2009 the reservation was published in the gazette.

That internal reservationwas a blessing with regard to the progress of the Arunthathiyar community."

He further thanked the Supreme Court judges on behalf of the DMK for establishing social justice for the oppressed and downtrodden.
