Coimbatore: The incident where the public drove away the SUEZ workers citing that they were commercialising drinking water supply by the SIHS Colony residents has caused a stir.

The Coimbatore Corporation has signed a contract with the French company SUEZ, to supply drinking water to the 100 wards of the Coimbatore Corporation. The public have been expressing their opposition to the project right from the beginning.

Even the opposition parties have stated that this project would create a lot of problems in the future and have been protesting for the cancellation of the contract and for the Corporation to undertake the drinking water distribution.

SUEZ, meanwhile, has been laying pipelines and undertaking work in various places. As part of this, a few SUEZ workers came to the SIHS colony near Ondipudur with a Poclain and other equipment for laying pipelines and began digging up the roads.

Initially, the residents thought that they were Corporation workers. However, when they realised that they were SUEZ employees, they laid siege to the workers. Further they demanded that they would not let the workers leave without closing the dug up roads.

Following this the Corporation officials who came to the spot tried to pacify the public, but the residents remained firm that they would not let the SUEZ workers continue their work and argued with the officials. Following this, the roads were closed.

The public interrupting the work of SUEZ employees caused a stir in the area.
