Chennai: Following trials of the Oxford Covid-19 vaccine at a medical college in Pune on Wednesday, two hospitals in Chennai - Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and Sri Ramachandra Hospital, will join the multi-centric clinical trial of 'Covishield' on nearly 300 health volunteers aged 18 and above in India, told State Health Minister C Vijayabaskar at a press meet, on Wednesday.

Considered the most promising, the SII, the world's largest vaccine maker has signed an agreement to manufacture the potential vaccine developed by the Jenner Institute of Oxford University in collaboration with British-Swedish pharma company AstraZeneca.

Upon directives from Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, the vaccine trials will commence soon in TN, told the Health Minister. He informed that Director of Public Health (Dr T S Selvavinayagam) will be the principal investigator for the project.

The Minister told that after successful completion of phase two and three clinical trials, the vaccine would be brought for public use which largely will help the government contain the coronavirus.

It may be noted that vital health parameters of the two volunteers, aged 32 and 48, who were administered the first shot of the 'Covishield' vaccine, is stable. The vaccine is being manufactured by Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII), at Bharti Vidyapeeth's Medical College and Hospital.
