Police arrest two for child marriage in Mettupalayam

Coimbatore: Police booked a case against 6 persons and arrested 2 people for child marriage. A lorry driver from Annur Road area in Mettupalayam has a 15-year-old daughter.

Coimbatore: Police booked a case against 6 persons and arrested 2 people for child marriage. A lorry driver from Annur Road area inMettupalayam has a 15-year-old daughter.

She is studying 10th standard and was married off to Chandrasekhar, 36, of Nanjappa Goundanpudur, Pokalur on June 24. Currently, the married student lives in her husband's house. She came to the Sirumugai Police Station yesterdayalong with one of her relatives when no one was at home.

She then lodged a complaint with the police saying that her parents forced her to get married against her wishes. She said her parents married her to the man based on favourable astrological prediction. In her complaint she stated that she disliked her married life and did not wish to stay in her husband's house. She stated that she wished to study further and hence asked the police to admit her in a home.

The police have registered a case against 6 persons under the Child Marriage Prohibition Act, 3 persons from the groom's side and 3 persons from the bride's side. Following this, the groom Chandrasekhar, one of his relatives were arrested and then the police produced the 3 persons including the student in the court.
