A rare breed of animal was spotted near Sivanmalai and the public informed the Forest department about this. The Forest department workers who rushed to the spot rescued the animal. It was later found during investigation that it is the endangered and rarely sighted Asian palm civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus), also called a toddy cat and mara naai in Tamil.

The animal is native to south and south-east Asia and is protected under Schedule II of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972..

The public spotted the animal raising strange sounds on the girivalam path around the temple. The Forest Department that received information regarding this rushed to the spot immediately and rescued the animal.

Speaking about this the officials said, "This is a rare breed and around three to four years old. The animal was spotted near a Indian blackberry tree. The animal might have come to the spot to eat the fruit. According to the 2008 census, these animals are nearing extinction and are on the list of endangered animals. It is a mammal that feeds on birds, rats and small reptiles and a nocturnal that hunts in the night. The Asian palm civets are usually spotted in dense forests; however fewer animals live in the less dense regions."

The Forest department officials also added, "The captured animal will be released at the reserve forest in the Oodhiyur region."
