Coimbatore: Rs.60.11 crore bio-mining facility at Vellalore dump yard and 12 micro-composting centers gather dust in Coimbatore.

Coimbatore: Rs.60.11 crore bio-mining facility at Vellalore dump yard and 12 micro-composting centers gather dust in Coimbatore.

Approximately 1,200 tonnes of garbage collected from the Corporation areas are dumped in the Vellalore dump yard. Garbage that has been dumped in this area over the last seven yearsamounts to nearly 20 lakh metric tonnes.

The Minister for Municipal Administration S.P. Velumani inaugurated a bio-mining facility at the Vellalore dump yard on June 5, under the Smart city scheme. The facility that was set up at a cost of Rs.60.11 crores was to be used for management of waste dumped in the open dump yard for several years.

The inauguration was done by the Minister and Rs.60.11 crores was allocated, however, no initiative towards recycling work has been undertaken by the contractor, at the dump yard.

Similarly, 69 micro-composting centers were to be set up within the Coimbatore Corporation to reduce the quantity of waste brought to the Vellalore dump yard. Construction of 12 of these micro-composting centers have been completed. On July 8, the Coimbatore Corporation announced that due to the establishment of these micro-composting centers, the amount of garbage being brought to the Vellalore dump yard would be reduced.

However, until today, no recycling work has been initiated at any of these centers as announced by the Corporation. The recycling centres that used the taxpayers money has not been of any use until now.

Under the circumstances, members of the public feel that the biomining facility at the Vellalore dumpyard must be initiated immediately without any delay and that the government must find a solution and put a stop to the environmental issues that have been cropping up in the Vellalore area.
