Bharat Biotech to trial COVAXIN through skin instead of muscle

Bharat Biotech is going to try intradermal vaccine delivery. If successful the COVAXIN would be much cheaper as very little quantity is needed and hence can be administered on many. Along with Indian Council of Medical Research, Bharat Biotech is working on a vaccine for COVID-19 pandemic that has gripped the world.

Clinical trials have begun in 12 selected cities and volunteers have been administered with vaccines. The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) , a health ministry arm that regulates the quality of drugs and vaccines in the country, has approved the intradermal route of the vaccine through its Subject Expert Committee.

The intradermal route uses less amount of vaccine, is less invasive and helps in better immune response. The approval came after elaborate tests and affirmations on animal toxicity testing. Teh volunteers are asked to submit a 6 month follow up which embodies testing of not only their general health but the development of COVD-19 antibodies after administering the vaccine.

The WHO has also endorsed the intradermal method and says there is an increased interest towards intradermal vaccine as the first layer of the skin is rich in antigen processing cells. It is to be noted that vaccines like BCG and rabies are intradermal.

Another important prospect of going for an intradermal vaccine is that it is cost effective and can be administered on many.
