1.5 lakh children from Anganwadi schools provided with rice, pulses and eggs: Officials

Coimbatore: District Officials have said that 1.5 lakhs children from Anganwadi have been provided with rice, pulses and eggs for the month of August.


Coimbatore: District Officials have said that 1.5 lakhs children from Anganwadi have been provided with rice, pulses and eggs for the month of August.

A total of 1,697 Anganwadi Centers are present in the Coimbatore district. Anganwadi Centers which are functioning under the Integrated Child Development Program of the Department of Social Welfare takes in children between the ages of 2 and 5.

The centres offer basic education and sports activities for children. Parents are made aware on how to raise children in a healthy and hygienic way. Children with parents who are both working are admitted in Anganwadi centres and hence it is very useful for working parents as they pick up children from the centres after work. About 1.5 lakh children are studying in Anganwadi centres in Coimbatore district alone.

With lockdown in place, children are not able to attend Anganwadi Centers. But in order to provide nutritious food to children continually the Anganwadi Center staff have directly visited children's homes to provide them with the rice, pulses and eggs.

Meenakshi, District Officer of Child Development Project said rice, pulses and eggs were being distributed since August 1to all the children studying in the Anganwadi Centers and 1.5 lakhs children have been benefited. She added that health mixes for pregnant women are also being distributed routinely.
