Coimbatore: Reiterating its stance on Vinayagar Chathurthi celebrations, this year, the Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday said the decision to ban public celebrations in connection with Ganesh Chaturthi festival was based on the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs on July 29.

Citing the ongoing Covid-19 situation and the announcement by the TN government on Vinayagar Chaturthi celebrations, theMadras High Court also on Wednesday said that people should follow government's directive. However, BJP and other pro-Hindu groups have asserted that they will defy the order by installing over 1.5 lakh Lord Ganesha idols across the State and celebrate the event, the customary way.

Meanwhile in Coimbatore, arrangements are being made like setting up of barricades and tubelights at Muthannan Kulam which is one of the places for Vinayagar Visarjan. This has raised the eyebrows of many.

Even a consultative meeting in this regard was held at the District Collectorate on Tuesday, in which representatives of various Hindu outfits took part and petitioned to grant permission to conduct the Vinayagar Chathurthi celebrations.

With the ban in place, the arrangements at Muthannan Kulam has made people wonder as to what these arrangements are for.

It maybe recalled that starting from March, such bans were imposed on all religious celebrations including the recent Aadi Perukku, Bakrid and Easter. Even the 74th Independence Day was a low-key affair this year, in view of the Covid-19 pandemic.
