Polytechnic student near Pollachi teaches tribal students who lack access to education during lockdown

Coimbatore: A polytechnic student near Pollachi teaches tribal students who lack access to education during lockdown. Many tribal students have started going to work as schools still remain closed and they do not have access to online teaching. Some teachers in tribal areas have volunteered to teach students in their areas.

There is no such facility in the tribal villages of Bangalamedu, Kakkakothiparai, Narikkalpathi, Ettithurai, Chellappillaikaradu and Vepparaipathi. More than 50 families live in the Vepparaipathi tribal village. The people here are mostly daily wage workers. Normally, students travel 5 km to their schools in Anaimalai and Kaliyapuram. These rural areas do not even have access to electricity and hence online education is out of question.



Kanagasabapathy, a polytechnic student from the tribal hamlet of Vepparaipathi near Pollachi decided to teach students in his village with the knowledge he has. He said, "Only a few students enrolled at the beginning, but parents brought their wards for the classes that I take at home. Before providing them with new books I teach through old books and PDF copies. I teach from morning to evening for Classes 1 to 9, five days a week."

He added that his friends also teach students at their own villages. He said he aims to place these children in government jobs. He also also distributes food to nearby villages with the help of his students during holidays.

As youngsters are whiling away time in mobiles and laptops, the work of Kanagasabapathy has earned appreciation from many quarters. While students in cities have mobiles and laptops to pursue their education, rural students, especially the one from poor backgrounds, are denied education. As responsible citizens, we need to share our knowledge with the underprivileged so that we can progress as a society.
