Increased elephant movement - Forest Department advises farmers and brick kiln workers near forests to stay cautious

Coimbatore: Due to increased wild elephant movement in the forests and the areas near them, the Forest Department has issued an advisory to the people living in the vicinity of the forests to stay safe.

Wild elephant movement has been noticed frequently in the forest areas near Coimbatore. Loss of lives and property has become common. To prevent this from occurring drones are being used in the forest areas to monitor the movement of elephants.

Under the circumstances, Forest Department has issued a warning to the people living in the Periyanaickenpalayam forest areas including Ranganathapuram, Thirumalur areas and Bhavani Aatropallam, Mars Estate and Thekkampatti-Bathrakaliamman Temple Road at the Mettupalayam zone and Veerapandi Moolakadu and Nanjundapuram areas at the Coimbatore forest zone. The people in these areas have been advised to stay safe due to the frequent movement of elephants.

North Indian migrant workers who depend on brick kilns for their livelihood have been asked not to step out or travel on two wheelers in the dark. The people who undertake agriculture on the borders of the forests and encroached the elephant corridor have been asked to exercise caution. The families that live in these areas are requested not to sleep outside.

The public have also been advised to inform the nearby forest workers if they spot any elephant movement.
