Garbage dumped at foothills of Maruthamalai causing environmental hazards

Coimbatore: Marudhamalai is located close to the forest and wildlife. People living at the foothills of Maruthamalai are suffering greatly from the unsanitary waste dumped in the area.

At the foot of Marudhamalai is a field of about 14 acres that belongs to the Horticulture Department. Some of the trees planted here are coconut, mango and sitaphal. Garbage is dumped in the area by the Somayampalayam Panchayat because of which the area looks like a dumpyard. Similarly, there have been complaints that occasional fires on landfills have caused air pollution and caused problems such as suffocation and respiratory problems. The garbage dump not only blocks the waterway in the, but also is a wildlife corridor. Sometimes, the animals consume dangerous plastics from the area too, allege the public.

When we spoke to people in the area about the problem, they said the act of dumping the garbage has been going on for six months. Even masks and gloves used by people due to the coronavirus outbreak are being dumped there. Frequent fires carry the risk of spreading skin and lung diseases through polluted air. A drinking trough for wildlife also is in place in the garbage dump. People in the area allege that by drinking the polluted water from the trough, animals get sick and die.

The public in the area demand immediate action against the practice of dumping garbage that poses dangers to both the public and wildlife.
