The Tamil Nadu government had announced that everyone in the state would be given a free mask at the rate of 2 masks per family member on the ration card. It is planned to provide 82 lakh face masks to about 9 lakh ration card holders in Coimbatore district. Around 1.5 lakh masks arrived at Coimbatore for the first phase. Of this, 70,000 masks have been returned to the manufacturer because they were not of the desired quality.

District administration officials said, "Masks are to be provided free of cost to the public through 1,442 ration shops in Coimbatore district. The handloom department will inspect the quality of these masks and provide them to us. Out of the 1.5 lakh masks sent, about 70,000 have been returned to the manufacturer as they were substandard."
