Coimbatore: Water released from the Pillur dam for the fourth consecutive day has caused the bridge connecting Lingapuram and Kaandhavayal to drown.

The Southwest monsoon rains have filled up the Pillur dam which water from the dam is released for the fourth consecutive day. Each day 10,000 cft to 32,000 cft excess water is opened out which reaches the Bhavani Sagar Dam. As a result of this, the water level in the Bhavani Sagar dam has reached 95 feet and the bridge connecting the areas of Kaandhavayal and Lingapuram near Sirumugai, located in the water catchment areas of the dam has submerged.

The bridge which is 30 feet high has been submerged andwater has begun to stagnate on top of the bridge. As a result of this, connectivity to the villages in the area has been affected. The bridge connecting Kaandhavayal, Aalur and Uliyur to Lingapuram is now surrounded by water on all sides.

Transport of essentials is extremely difficult. The people of the villages lamented that each year during the monsoons, they feel as though they are living on an island.

Agriculture in this area takes place over 5,000 acres of land and the situation does not even permit the transport of the produce. Hence, the people requested the government to take action to construct a bridge soon.
