Valparai witnesses historical rains; Sholayar Dam reaches full capacity

Coimbatore: Sholayar Dam, the source of the Parambikulam Aliyar Project reached its full capacity when it sharply rose 38 feet just in three days due to the heavy rains lashing Valparai.

Coimbatore: Sholayar Dam, the source of the Parambikulam Aliyar Project reached its full capacity when it sharply rose 38 feet just in three days due to the heavy rains lashing Valparai.

The water stored in the Nirar Dam near Akkamalai is sent to the Sholayar Dam through an underground water canal. The water is then used to generate power in two power stations, following which it is taken to the Parambikulam Dam. From there, it issent to Pollachi, Udumalai, Dharapuram, Palladam and Karur via Aliyar and Thirumoorhty dams. This water is used for agricultural purposes and also as drinking water.



Due to the heavy rains at Valparai for the past few days, the Nadumalai river, Pudhuthottam river and Koozhangal river have flooded. The Sholayar Dam that is 165 feet was recorded at 118 feet the day before yesterday. However, it rose 38 feet and has gone upto 157 feet today.



Following this, around 10 AM today the dam crossed its full capacity of 160 feet. As of this morning, 231 mm of rainfall was recorded at Valparai, 305 mm in Chinnakallar, 210 mm in Nirar dam and 248 mm in Sholayar dam.

The PWD is monitoring the dam. Valparai DSP Vivekanandan, Inspector Maheshwari and Sub Inspector Sathish Kumar visited the areas of Vazhaithottam, Stanmore, Vellamalai Mattam and Sholayar Dam and inspected them. Further, special forces police are on the ready to assist in case floods occur.
