Unmaintained Neeli Canal causes crop losses of lakhs of rupees during the rainy season

Coimbatore: Neeli canal that has not been desilted has caused the destruction of crops worth lakhs of rupees.

Coimbatore: Neeli canal that has not been desilted has caused the destruction of crops worth lakhs of rupees.

The Southwest monsoon has intensified and the regions close to the Western Ghats have been experiencing heavy rainfall. The catchment areas of the Siruvani Dam have been receiving heavy rains for the past four days. The continuous rains have caused the water from the Vellingiri hills to pour into the Neeli canal through which it reaches the Semmedu Ukkalam. The excess water then travels to Chinnar and eventually reaches Noyyal.

However, the Neeli canal that is normally dredged and desilted once a year, had not been maintained this year. As a result of this rainwater enterd many acres of agriculturaL lands and destroyed the crops. Rains accompanied by heavy winds have uprooted plantain trees ready to bear fruit. Plantains, betel nuts and shallots, ready for harvest have been destroyed due to the rains.

Farmers lament that this has caused them a loss to the tune of lakhs of rupees. If the Neeli canal had been maintained, then this huge loss could have been avoided, they accuse.

"The agricultural officers who come for review take only the previously accounted land into consideration and skip the others. The destroyed crops must be taken into account accurately and relief must be provided appropriately", they requested.
