Patrol officers have spotted a 9- to 10-year-old male elephant lying ill and exhausted at the Nellimalai Reserve. The District Forest Officer was informed who instructed the department personnel to track the elephant during the day. Finding the sick elephant proved to be a challged was a challenge as it was in the middle of a herd. Eventually, they found the animal and informed the forest veterinarian atf Thekkampatti. The jumbo was fighting for its life when found.

They found a lesion near its jaw that was 20 cm deep and 9 cm in diameter. The injury may have been caused by a fight with another elephant and may have been 8 to 10 days old, said the doctor analyzing the pus and the presence of worms in the wound.
