Minor girl flees home to avoid marriage

A 17-year-old girl of Arumugagoundanur, near Perur, has reportedly gone missing to escape from the clutches of child marriage. The police registered a case and was trying to trace the whereabouts of the girl. According to the police it is the second time her parents tried to get her married.

Perur Inspector P. Selvaraj said that three months ago her parents arranged for her marriage with her cousin. The police had warned the relatives of legal action if they married her off.

It is learnt that off late the girl’s grandmother (father’s mother) suffering from cancer was terminally ill and wanted to see the girl married before she breathed her last. Relatives planned to get the two married, in a low profile event, following which she fled from the house on Tuesday night.

The girl’s grandmother died on Thursday. The police are yet to trace the girl.
