Enumeration of manual scavenging staff to begin on Monday

The Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment-sponsored enumeration of those involved in manual scavenging and those dependent on them would begin on February 22 in all the five zones of the Coimbatore Corporation, said K. Vijayakarthikeyan, Corporation Commissioner.

In a release, Mr. Vijayakarthikeyan said that the objective of the drive was to spot those who were left out in the previous enumeration undertaken in 2014.

The outcome of the enumeration would be to identify those involved in cleaning unhygienic toilets, open defecation, septic tanks, open drains and those involved in cleaning human excrete along the railway lines, and to arrange for rehabilitation of such workers.

He also exhorted the public, NGOs, private organisations and activists to help in identifying such workers and help them submit the required forms with full details to rehabilitate them.
