Bhavani river to remain clean at the cost of Rs.91.7 Crore

Bhavani - A major river of Kongunadu region of Tamil Nadu is polluted because of 77 illegal dyeing units functioning on both sides of the river endangering the lives of more than six million people.

So finally the after a struggle of 5 years an Underground Drainage Project for Rs.91.7 crore for the town located on Bhavani River has been sanctioned to the Mettupalayam Municipality. The three towns for which the project was sanctioned is Kumarapalayam, Bhavani, and Mettupalayam.

The project will cover 22,000 household and commercial connections as they will be provided with several manholes, pipelines, and a sewage water treatment plant will be set up to treat the sewage water so as to utilise it for supplying it to colleges and industries for cleaning purposes. The projected will be funded by state government's grant of Rs.64.19 crore, 18.34 crore as loan and municipality will be providing a fund for Rs.9.17 crore. The detailed report will be sent for technical and administrative sanction to state government after a council meeting.

Though this move of state government is very much appreciated by the Mettupalayam municipality. But an NGO secretary M. Su Mani working for the cause of SAVE BHAVANI is hoping that this should not be a mere eye wash with the local body election's arrival. He even quoted that the Coimbatore project took ten long years for completion due to lack of expertise and had so much of corruption so in this projects this drawback shouldn’t happen. The Mettupalayam municipality has decided to call tenders before the elections are announced.
