Park to come up on reserved site at Kothari layout after 40 years

To be established at a cost of Rs. 34 lakh; a dream come true for residents of Kothari Layout.

Hope renewed for the residents of Kothari Layout to get a park in their area, as the Coimbatore Corporation started work for the park on Wednesday. Located on Trichy Road near Sanganoor Canal, the park will be established on 54 cents at an estimate of Rs. 34 lakh.

Coordinator of Tamil Nadu Reserved Site Protection Committee S.P. Thiagarajan said that in 1975 the promoter of Kothari Layout had divided the area into 43 house sites on 5.37 acres and set aside the mandatory 54 cents for the reserved site. “But, he later sold the reserved site to four persons and one of them even built a house on it,” he said.

Court directive

In 2009, the Corporation identified the reserved site and erected a board on the site, when the occupants of the reserved site approached the Madras High Court. The court gave a direction in favour of the civic body. In 2014, the house was demolished and the Corporation took possession of the site. The Corporation then sanctioned Rs. 34 lakh for establishing a park at the site.

Ward Councillor S. Thamaraiselvi said that foundation for the park was laid before the elections, but the work could not commence as model code of conduct came into effect.

On Wednesday there was some trouble initially as families living on the encroached banks of the canal close to the park raised objection. They said they have been using the reserved site to get access to the road and for other domestic purposes and constructing a compound wall around the park will affect them. Corporation officials pacified them and assured houses for them in the apartments built by Slum Clearance Board.

The president of Kothari and B.R. Nagar Welfare Association M. Karuppaiah (68), who bought a house site in 1979 and built a house in 1983, was glad that people of the locality have at last got space for a walk and recreation. “We were repeatedly making representations to the Corporation for the park,” he added.
