Dalit man's murder: High court refuses to grant bail to girl's parents

About two months after the murder of an Udumalpet-based dalit youth who had married a girl from another community, the Madras high court on Monday declined to release the girl's parents on bail saying their release would have an impact on society, as it concerned casteism.

Sankar, an engineering student, married his college mate a few months ago braving threats from the girl's family. On March 14, while he and his wife, Kausalya, were returning after shopping, bike-borne gangs hacked the couple, leaving Sankar dead and Kausalya seriously injured.

The crime, captured in a CCTV camera in the vicinity, shocked the state. Several people, including Kaulsalya's parents Chinasamy and Annalakshmi, were arrested in connection with the murder.

Justice P Kalaiarasan, dismissing the bail pleas of the parents and V Prasanna Kumar, said repeat of the offence could not be ruled out if the three petitioners were to be released on bail, and added: "Their release on bail will have an impact on society. There is a possibility of the petitioners tampering with evidence. This court is of the considered view that under the present circumstances it is not conducive to enlarge them on bail."
