Jewellers down shutters

Jewellery manufacturers and retailers here took part in the State-wide strike on Thursday.

B. Muthuvenkatraman, president of the Coimbatore Jewellery Manufacturers' Association, said 55,000 goldsmiths employed in the 12,000 units here went on a strike in protest against the government norm making it mandatory to provide PAN card details for purchases of Rs. 2 lakh and above.

“We are afraid of our future,” he said. Many customers do not have PAN card. Many do not know about the new norm. They are afraid to share their income details with the jeweller and hence do not make purchases.

According to B. Sabarinath, secretary of Coimbatore Jewellers' Association, nearly 650 shops in the city and jewellery outlets in the nearby towns did not open on Thursday.
