An Andhra Pradesh-based jewellery trader was allegedly robbed of around ₹1 crore in cash and silver articles by a four-member gang near Lakshmi Mills Junction in Coimbatore on Sunday. Four persons travelling in a suspicious car were later intercepted at Ulundurpet, and are being questioned in connection with the case.
A daylight robbery involving around ₹1 crore in cash and silver articles near the busy Lakshmi Mills Junction in Coimbatore sent shockwaves through the city, with police detaining four persons after a suspected getaway car was intercepted at a check-post near Ulundurpet.
The victim, identified as Rangasamy, is from Nellore in Andhra Pradesh and is employed at a jewellery shop run by one of his relatives. Police said he regularly travelled to Coimbatore to purchase jewellery from manufacturers and traders.
On Saturday, Rangasamy arrived in Coimbatore from Andhra Pradesh by an omni bus to purchase jewellery. After reaching the Lakshmi Mills Junction area, he reportedly contacted a trader from whom he usually purchased jewellery and informed him of his arrival.
He subsequently got down at the Lakshmi Mills bus stop on Avinashi Road and was waiting for someone to pick him up when a car carrying four persons allegedly approached him.
According to the complaint, the occupants of the car allegedly snatched around ₹1 crore in cash and silver articles from Rangasamy before fleeing from the spot.
The incident, which occurred in a busy part of the city during the daytime, caused a stir.
Rangasamy subsequently lodged a complaint with the Race Course police station. Police officers visited the spot and alerted senior officials. CCTV footage from the area was being examined, while checks were intensified on major roads and routes leading out of the district. Alerts were also issued to toll plazas and check-posts.
Meanwhile, police at the Ulundurpet check-post intercepted a car carrying persons who were considered suspicious. The driver and three others were detained and are being questioned.
Coimbatore police were informed about the detention, following which a special police team was sent to Ulundurpet to assist in the investigation.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Thangadurai was overseeing the inquiry at the Race Course police station. Police said further details regarding the case would be known after the questioning of the detained persons and completion of the investigation.
Investigators are also examining whether anyone from Coimbatore had provided information or assistance to the gang in connection with the alleged robbery.
