Rainfall activity has declined significantly across Coimbatore district, with Annur recording the highest rainfall at 22 mm in the latest 24-hour period. The Siruvani dam water level stands at 872.43 metres against its full level of 878.50 metres.
Coimbatore: Rainfall activity has gradually eased across Coimbatore district, with most areas recording little or no rain during the 24-hour period ending at 7.30 a.m. on September 2. Annur recorded the highest rainfall at 22 mm, classified as moderate rainfall, while the district received a total of 25 mm, with the average rainfall recorded at 1.09 mm.
The decline is particularly evident in Valparai, which has been receiving frequent rainfall since the onset of the South-West Monsoon and has been a major contributor to the district’s overall rainfall figures. However, rainfall intensity has reduced considerably over the past four to five days.
The extent of the decline becomes evident when compared with the August 27 rainfall report. On that day, Chinnakalar and Sholayar recorded the highest rainfall at 76 mm each, followed by Cinchona at 66 mm, Valparai PAP at 57 mm and Valparai Taluk at 54 mm. Rainfall at Chinnakalar, Cinchona and Sholayar was categorised as heavy, while Valparai PAP and Valparai Taluk recorded moderate rainfall.
The district had recorded a total rainfall of 331 mm and an average of 14.39 mm on August 27. Significantly, the five rainfall stations in the Valparai region together accounted for 329 mm, or around 99.4% of the district’s total recorded rainfall, highlighting the region’s major contribution to Coimbatore’s rainfall figures during the period.
In contrast, the latest report shows Cinchona recording just 1 mm and Chinnakalar 2 mm, while Valparai PAP, Valparai Taluk and Sholayar recorded no rainfall. The sharp reduction indicates a substantial easing of rainfall activity in the Valparai region compared with the situation last week.
Elsewhere, Coimbatore North, Coimbatore South, Mettupalayam, Sulur, Perur, Madukkarai, Pollachi, Kinathukadavu and Anaimalai also recorded no rainfall during the latest reporting period.
The easing of rainfall has also been noticeable in the Siruvani hills, where intense showers had earlier triggered a sharp rise in water flow and a flash-flood situation. The Kovai Kutralam eco-tourism destination at the foothills of Siruvani was temporarily closed following the rise in water levels. As conditions improved, the Forest Department reopened the destination to visitors from September 1.
Meanwhile, the Siruvani drinking water system continues to supply water to Coimbatore through its main pipelines. As of September 2, the reported supply through the 1,000 mm, 500 mm and 450 mm main supply lines is 59.07 MLD and 101.40 MLD.
