A 61-year-old woman was allegedly attacked by a burglar who entered her home in Edayarpalayam in broad daylight and pressed a pillow over her face before fleeing with her 5½-sovereign gold chain. Police arrested a 21-year-old suspect and recovered the stolen jewellery.
Coimbatore: A 61-year-old woman was allegedly attacked during a daylight robbery at her residence in Devangar Nagar, Edayarpalayam, after a man entered her house while she was asleep and attempted to steal her gold chain.
According to the police complaint, the incident occurred on the afternoon of August 24. The victim, Prema, wife of Mahadevan, lives alone at the house. The suspect allegedly entered the residence and attempted to snatch her gold chain while she was asleep.
Prema woke up during the attempt and raised an alarm. The suspect allegedly pressed a pillow over her face to silence her before fleeing with the chain, weighing around 5½ sovereigns. He reportedly escaped on a two-wheeler parked outside the house.
After recovering from the attack, Prema went upstairs and spotted the suspect fleeing. She recognised him as Srinath, 21, a native of Vellore district who is currently residing in Bharathi Nagar, Kovilmedu, and was known to her.
Prema subsequently lodged a complaint with the Kavundampalayam police. Following an investigation, police arrested Srinath and recovered the stolen 5½-sovereign gold chain from his possession. Further investigation is underway.
