Coimbatore City Police conducted surprise inspections at rooms occupied by college students across the city on Monday (August 24) to prevent drug use, sale and distribution among students. More than 100 police personnel took part; no narcotic substances were found, while five vehicles without proper documents and vehicles fitted with altered silencers were seized.
Coimbatore: More than 100 personnel of the Coimbatore City Police conducted surprise inspections at rooms occupied by college students across the city on Monday (August 24), as part of stepped-up surveillance against drug use and trafficking in areas where students reside.
The inspections were undertaken following inputs shared through police coordination officers attached to colleges, who regularly liaise with the City Police on offences and other issues involving students. Police teams checked rooms where groups of students were staying outside their college campuses and also verified the presence and activities of outsiders found at such premises.
The exercise was aimed at identifying possible drug use or storage and tracking persons suspected of involvement in the sale or distribution of narcotic substances. The operation was carried out on the directions of the City Police Commissioner and the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore South, with the supervision of the Podanur and Kuniyamuthur Assistant Commissioners.
No narcotic substances were found during the inspections, police said. Five vehicles were, however, seized for not having proper documents. Vehicles fitted with altered silencers that were allegedly causing inconvenience to the public were also taken into custody.
The police said such inspections and surveillance would continue in areas where college students reside as part of measures to keep them away from narcotic substances and prevent their sale, transportation and use.
