Coimbatore: The water levels in the major reservoirs of Tiruppur district - Amaravathi and Thirumurthi dams - have witnessed significant rise. Continuous rainfall in the catchment areas has led to increased water inflow to both dams.
As of July 30, the water level in Amaravathi dam, which has a total capacity of 90 feet, has risen to 28.54 feet. The dam is receiving an inflow of 56 cubic feet per second. Considering the current water level in the dam, water is being released at the rate of 1790 cubic feet per second, Water Resources Department officials informed.
Similarly, Thirumurthi dam, located near Udumalaipettai in Tiruppur district, has a total capacity of 60 feet. The water level in this dam stands at 35.44 feet as of July 30. The dam continues to receive water inflow due to persistent rainfall in the catchment areas.
Water Resources Department officials stated that water is currently being released from Thirumurthi dam at the rate of 21 cubic feet per second. Farmers are elated as the water levels in both dams are gradually increasing.
Due to the ongoing southwest monsoon in the Western Ghats region, water inflow to the dams is expected to increase further in the coming days. Farmers have expressed hope that irrigation facilities will improve as a result.
