139 kg of Banned Tobacco Products, Painkillers Seized; Six Arrested in Coimbatore

Coimbatore City Police arrested six persons in separate operations, seizing over 139 kg of banned tobacco products, 1.45 kg of ganja, narcotic tablets, injections and syringes as part of an intensified crackdown on illegal tobacco and drug trafficking.


Coimbatore: As part of the ongoing crackdown on narcotics and banned tobacco products, the Coimbatore City Police arrested six persons in separate operations across the city, seizing a large quantity of contraband.

In Ganapathy's K.K. Nagar, police arrested Kathiravan (39), Suresh (46) and Vijayan (48) for allegedly selling banned tobacco products. During the raid, police seized 139.425 kg of tobacco products, including Hans, Cool Lip, Vimal, Swagat and Ganesh brands, along with ₹4,500 in cash and three two-wheelers. The three accused were remanded to judicial custody.

In separate operations at Vadavalli, Goundampalayam, Kuniyamuthur and Sundarapuram, police arrested Sundararajan (46), Selvakumar, Prasad (24), Lenin Prasad (44) and Kavitha (50) for allegedly selling banned gutka products. They were later released on bail after legal formalities. A quantity of banned tobacco products was also seized from them.

In another operation at Asad Nagar in Karumbukadai, police acted on a tip-off regarding the sale of ganja and narcotic substances. Mohammed Sherif (21), Mohammed Asif (27) and Nawaz (31) were arrested for allegedly possessing and selling narcotics.

Police seized 1.450 kg of ganja, 382 painkiller tablets, six injections and four syringes from the accused. A search is under way for the prime accused, identified as 'Maanga' Rizwan alias Rizwan Suhail, who remains absconding.

Police said the operations were part of the ongoing drive against the illegal sale of banned tobacco products and narcotic substances across Coimbatore city.
