Coimbatore: Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja IAS has issued a strict directive making dengue prevention measures mandatory for all construction companies and private building owners across the city's 100 wards. The Commissioner has warned that failure to comply will result in legal action under the Tamil Nadu Public Health Act 1939.
The Coimbatore Corporation, spanning five zones—East, West, North, South, and Central—covering 100 ward areas, has been conducting continuous mosquito eradication activities through specialized dengue control workers. With the current climate being conducive for the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes that spread dengue fever, authorities have emphasized the urgent need for stringent preventive measures at construction sites.
Key Guidelines for Construction Sites:
Private construction sites must not keep water storage tanks and blue plastic drums in an open state. Water tanks and containers must be cleaned with bleaching powder or lime, filled with water, and covered properly to prevent mosquito entry.
Lift pits in buildings under construction should be treated with bleaching powder or used engine oil to prevent water stagnation and larvae formation. Construction sites must ensure that workers' temporary shelters or sheds are free from waste plastic materials, tea cups, tyres, polythene bags, eggshells, and coconut shells, which should be removed immediately.
Earth-digging pans and mixing trolleys used at construction sites must be washed daily and stored without water accumulation.
Waste Management and Sanitation Measures:
Used paint tins, broken pots, plastic pipes, cardboard, and thermocol from construction activities must be removed immediately to prevent water stagnation. Parcel food containers, polythene covers, glass, and water bottles used by construction workers must also be disposed of properly.
The area surrounding the building should be maintained to prevent wastewater stagnation. Unnecessary items like tyres and other materials should not be placed on temporary roofs at construction sites.
