Railway Police, Anti-Narcotics Wing Conduct Intensive Checks at Tiruppur Railway Station

Railway Police and the Anti-Narcotics Wing conducted intensive inspections at Tiruppur Railway Station to curb the smuggling of tobacco products and narcotic substances through trains. Tobacco products brought by a few passengers for personal use were seized during the operation.

Tiruppur: Railway Police and personnel from the Anti-Narcotics Wing carried out intensive inspections at Tiruppur Railway Station on Wednesday amid concerns over the alleged smuggling of tobacco products and narcotic substances through train services.

Tiruppur witnesses the arrival of a large number of migrant workers by train every day from various parts of the country, particularly the northern States, to work in the city’s knitwear industry. Police said the inspections were intensified following repeated complaints that the heavy passenger movement was being misused for the transportation of contraband, including gutka and ganja.

The joint inspection was carried out on passengers arriving by several long-distance trains, including the Kerala–Delhi Express, Alappuzha–Dhanbad Express, Ernakulam–Bengaluru Intercity Express and Thiruvananthapuram–Shalimar Express.

Police also deployed sniffer dogs to inspect trains, platforms and other areas of the railway station as part of the enforcement drive.

During the operation, officials seized tobacco products, including pan masala, from a few migrant workers who claimed the items were meant for personal consumption. The passengers were warned and let off.

The Anti-Narcotics Wing said such inspections would be conducted on a regular basis to curb the movement of narcotic substances and other prohibited tobacco products through the railway network.
