Coimbatore: The Singanallur Police have arrested one person in connection with the abduction of Dhanasekar (53), the owner of a firm in Singanallur and a former Congress district functionary, and intensified efforts to trace four others allegedly involved in the crime.
According to the police, Dhanasekar was cleaning his car outside his residence when a group of unidentified men arrived in a car, allegedly forced him into their vehicle at knifepoint and assaulted him.
Police said the accused drove along the Palakkad Bypass Road and allegedly demanded ₹2 crore for his release. When Dhanasekar told them that he did not possess such an amount, the gang reportedly photographed him and sent the images to another person. The accused later allegedly took away his mobile phone, house keys and car keys before abandoning him by the roadside and fleeing the scene.

Based on Dhanasekar's complaint, the Singanallur Police registered a case and launched an investigation. After analysing CCTV footage and other technical evidence, investigators identified the suspects as members of a five-member gang allegedly led by Police Karthik alias Karthik, a habitual offender from Podanur.
A special police team subsequently traced one of the accused to Tiruchirappalli, arrested him and brought him to Coimbatore for further investigation.
Police have launched a search to trace and arrest the remaining four accused. Further investigation is under way.
