Coimbatore: A massive protest was organized by the DMK student wing near Thudiyalur, Coimbatore on Friday demanding the resignation of Tamil Nadu Vetri Kazhagam's Human Resource Development Minister Sarath Kumar over a controversial video allegedly showing him using drugs. The Thudiyalur police arrested over 500 DMK activists who participated in the unauthorized demonstration and detained them in a private marriage hall, creating a tense situation in the area.

A few days ago, a video surfaced on social media showing Minister Sarath Kumar at a cricket ground, apparently crushing a powder-like substance on his mobile phone. Many social media users claimed it was a narcotic substance, triggering widespread criticism. Following the controversy, Minister Sarath Kumar released a video statement along with his wife and child, clarifying that he was crushing medicine for his child.

However, the DMK has strongly condemned the incident and has been organizing protests across various parts of Tamil Nadu. As part of this campaign, the DMK student wing organized a demonstration on Friday morning near NGGO Colony in Thudiyalur, Coimbatore, led by district secretary Thondamuthur Ravi.

More than 500 people including DMK district administrators, women's wing members, and student wing activists participated in the protest. The demonstrators raised slogans demanding "Minister Sarath Kumar must resign" and held banners with statements against the Tamil Nadu Vetri Kazhagam government.

Over 100 police personnel were deployed for security during the protest. As the demonstration was conducted without permission, Thudiyalur police arrested more than 500 DMK activists. The arrested individuals were loaded into vehicles and detained in a nearby private marriage hall.
The mass arrest created a brief period of tension in the area. It is noteworthy that the DMK has been continuing similar protests across the state demanding action in this matter.
