Iron rods protruding from van pierce two-wheeler riders; man killed, woman injured in Coimbatore

A 56-year-old man was killed and a 21-year-old woman was injured after a van carrying iron rods without precautionary measures pierced both while travelling on the Ukkadam–Selvapuram bypass road in Coimbatore.


COIMBATORE: A 56-year-old man was killed and a 21-year-old woman sustained serious injuries after iron rods protruding from a van pierced a two-wheeler rider and his pillion rider on the Ukkadam–Selvapuram bypass road in Coimbatore on Tuesday morning.

The deceased was identified as Narayanan (56) of Kovaipudur. The injured woman, Priyadarshini (21), also from Kovaipudur, was admitted to the Coimbatore Government Hospital for treatment.

According to police, Narayanan was travelling on a two-wheeler with Priyadarshini when the accident occurred near a weighbridge on the Ukkadam–Selvapuram bypass road. A van carrying iron rods allegedly without proper safety precautions was proceeding on the stretch when the rods protruding from the front portion of the vehicle pierced both the riders.

Police said Narayanan suffered grievous injuries to his eye and head in the impact and died on the spot. Priyadarshini sustained severe injuries and was rescued by bystanders before being rushed to the Coimbatore Government Hospital, where she is undergoing treatment.

The Coimbatore West Traffic Investigation Wing has registered a case and launched a search for the van driver, identified as Ayyappan (27) of Sedal Estate in Valparai, who allegedly fled the scene after the accident.
