Coimbatore District Collector Pawan Kumar Giriyappanar has directed all government and private schools to administer a pledge against elder abuse on June 15, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. The initiative aims to instill values of respecting and protecting senior citizens among students from a young age.

Coimbatore: District Collector Pawan Kumar Giriyappanar has issued orders to all schools in Coimbatore district to administer a special pledge against elder abuse to students on June 15, observed as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

Every year, June 15 is commemorated as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day to raise awareness about the mistreatment of elderly persons. In observance of this day, the district administration has instructed all government and private schools operating in Coimbatore district to conduct a special pledge-taking ceremony.

The pledge that students will take states: "As a citizen of India, I pledge to care for elderly persons in my family with affection and in a proper manner, and will not use inappropriate words that hurt them mentally or physically. I promise to respect their feelings."

The pledge further states: "I solemnly pledge to give priority to elderly persons in public places such as hospitals, banks, and buses, and will strive to prevent any form of abuse or violence against them."

The primary objective of this initiative is to create awareness among the younger generation about the welfare and protection of senior citizens. The pledge is expected to help instill awareness among school students from an early age about preventing physical and mental abuse that elderly persons face in families.

District Collector Pawan Kumar Giriyappanar has emphasized that school administrations make arrangements for students to take this pledge on June 15 in all schools across the district.

This awareness drive is part of a larger effort to address the growing concerns about elder abuse in society. By involving students in this pledge, the district administration hopes to create a generation that values and respects senior citizens, ensuring their dignity and well-being in families and communities.
