Wind Power Season Begins in Tamil Nadu; Installed Capacity Rises to 12,159 MW

The annual wind power season has commenced across Tamil Nadu, with the state’s installed wind energy capacity increasing to 12,159 MW. Industry sources expect higher renewable energy generation in the coming months, helping meet the state’s rising electricity demand.

Coimbatore: With the onset of the annual wind season across Tamil Nadu, the state’s renewable energy sector is gearing up for a significant increase in power generation, offering support to the growing electricity requirements of industries and consumers.

The wind season, which generally extends from late May to September, is a key period for renewable energy production in Tamil Nadu, one of the country’s foremost wind energy hubs.

According to industry sources, India’s cumulative installed wind power capacity reached 56,807 MW as of May 2026. Tamil Nadu continues to remain a major contributor to the sector, accounting for a substantial share of the nation’s wind-based electricity generation.

The state’s installed wind power capacity has increased from 11,739 MW in 2024-25 to 12,159 MW in 2025-26, reflecting continued investments and expansion in renewable energy infrastructure.

Data from the previous season showed that Tamil Nadu generated 14,887 million units (MU) of wind energy, playing a crucial role in meeting power demand during peak consumption periods.

Industry stakeholders expressed confidence that the current season would deliver strong generation levels, aided by favourable wind conditions and the addition of new capacity.

They noted that higher wind power generation would not only help bridge the state’s increasing energy demand but also strengthen Tamil Nadu’s position as a leader in renewable energy production.

With India accelerating its transition towards cleaner sources of energy, a productive wind season is expected to further reinforce Tamil Nadu’s contribution to the country’s renewable energy ambitions, industry sources added.
