Sulur Minor Girl Case: K.R. Sankaran Appointed Special Public Prosecutor; Madras HC Rejects SIT Probe Plea

Senior Advocate K.R. Sankaran has been appointed as the Special Public Prosecutor to conduct the trial in the Sulur minor girl assault and murder case. Meanwhile, the Madras High Court has closed a petition seeking a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe, observing that the investigation is proceeding in the right direction.

Chennai:

The Tamil Nadu government has appointed Senior Advocate K.R. Sankaran as the Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) to conduct the trial in the Sulur minor girl sexual assault and murder case.

The appointment was informed to the Madras High Court by Advocate General Vijay Narayan during a hearing held on May 29, 2026. The State also assured the court that all legal proceedings in the case would be expedited to ensure a speedy trial.

The case relates to the alleged sexual assault and murder of a 10-year-old girl from Pallapalayam near Sulur in Coimbatore district, which triggered widespread outrage across Tamil Nadu.

Hearing a petition seeking the constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT), a vacation bench comprising Justices G.R. Swaminathan and V. Lakshminarayanan declined to order an SIT probe, observing that the investigation was progressing in the right direction.

“We are of the view that things are going in the right direction,” the bench observed after Advocate General Vijay Narayan detailed the measures taken by the State to expedite both the investigation and prosecution.

The petition had been filed by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader P. Chokkalingam, seeking the formation of an SIT to ensure a free and fair investigation. Counsel for the petitioner, Ramasamy Meyyappan, argued that sensitive details about the victim’s family were being circulated on social media and that multiple theories regarding the girl’s death were being discussed publicly.

However, the High Court noted that the focus should remain on bringing the perpetrators to justice rather than on social media speculation.

During the hearing, the Advocate General submitted that the government was according utmost importance to the case and had fast-tracked DNA testing as part of the investigation. He also informed the court that Senior Advocate K.R. Sankaran had been appointed as Special Public Prosecutor to ensure swift prosecution of the accused.

State counsel John Sathyan further informed the bench that an Additional Superintendent of Police has been supervising the investigation.
