Corporation Commissioner Inspects Amma Unavagams as Part of Quality Assessment Drive

Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran inspected Amma Unavagams across the city to upgrade infrastructure, ensure hygiene standards and improve food quality at the subsidised community kitchens.


Coimbatore: Acting on the directions of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran on Friday conducted comprehensive inspections at Amma Unavagams functioning under the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation and reviewed the quality of food being served to the public.




During the inspection conducted on May 23, 2026, the Commissioner personally visited the eateries, interacted with staff members and even tasted the food provided to the public to assess quality standards firsthand.






According to officials, the State government has instructed all corporations and municipalities in Tamil Nadu to upgrade infrastructure facilities at Amma Unavagams, immediately procure required cooking equipment and ensure uninterrupted supply of hygienic, quality and tasty food to the public.




Based on these directions, several improvement measures are set to be undertaken at all 12 Amma Unavagams functioning under the Coimbatore Corporation limits to ensure clean and hygienic food service for the public.






As part of the inspection, the Commissioner visited Amma Unavagams located at Masakalipalayam Main Road (Ward 53), Singanallur Bus Stand (Ward 59), Poomarket Main Road, Devanagapettai Street No.1 (Ward 72), Mettupalayam Road Bus Stop premises (Ward 45), Maniyakarampalayam Main Road (Ward 19), Saravanampatti Main Road (Ward 10), Kuniyamuthur Rice Mill Road (Ward 88), Kovaipudur Main Road (Ward 90), Podanur Panchayat Office Road (Ward 98), Thirumal Street (Ward 82) and the District Government Hospital campus (Ward 83), among others.




The Commissioner reviewed the functioning of the canteens and enquired with employees about operational requirements and challenges. He also instructed officials to prepare project estimates for proposed development works and directed the concerned engineers to take necessary action regarding infrastructure needs.






Further, staff members were instructed to maintain cleanliness in and around the premises and ensure that food is served to the public in a hygienic and sanitary manner.




Assistant Commissioners, Assistant Executive Engineers, Zonal Health Officers and Councillor Mohan were present during the inspection.
