Second suspect in Sulur minor girl murder case remanded

Mohanraj, the second accused in the murder of a 10-year-old girl near Sulur in Coimbatore, has been remanded to judicial custody till May 27 as police continue intensive investigation into the case.

The murder of a 10-year-old girl in Kannampalayam near Sulur in Coimbatore district has triggered widespread concern across Tamil Nadu, with police intensifying their investigation into the case.

In connection with the incident, the second accused, Mohanraj, was arrested by Sulur police and produced before the Sulur Judicial Magistrate Court under heavy police security.

Police sources said Mohanraj was interrogated at a secret location before being presented before Judicial Magistrate Arunkumar. After hearing the case, the court remanded him to judicial custody till May 27. He was later lodged at Coimbatore Central Prison amid tight security arrangements.

Earlier, another accused in the case, Karthik (33), sustained a leg fracture after allegedly falling from a bridge while attempting to escape police custody. He is currently undergoing treatment at the Coimbatore Government Hospital, where additional police personnel have been deployed for security.

According to police, Karthik, a native of Nagapattinam currently residing at Pallapalayam near Coimbatore, and his associate Mohanraj were arrested in connection with the abduction and murder of the girl, whose body was recovered from the Kannampalayam tank on Friday.

Inspector General of Police (West Zone) R.V. Ramya Bharathi confirmed the arrests, while Coimbatore District Police stated that further investigation is under way.

The incident also triggered protests in the locality. Residents from the girl’s neighbourhood staged a road blockade on Tiruchi Road in front of the Sulur Police Station from around 9 pm on Friday till 5 am on Saturday, demanding swift action against the accused. Traffic on the arterial stretch was diverted through alternate routes during the protest.





Senior police officials, including IG R.V. Ramya Bharathi, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Coimbatore Range) P. Saminathan and Coimbatore Rural Superintendent of Police Allatipalli Pavan Kumar Reddy, camped at Sulur police station overnight and monitored the investigation being carried out by special teams led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Karikal Pari Shankar.

Police officials also held talks with the protesters, while around 300 police personnel were deployed in the area to maintain law and order.

TVK’s Sulur MLA N.M. Sukumar, who visited the protest site late on Friday night, assured residents that the accused would be arrested by Saturday morning.
