A 41-year-old man from Ariyalur was allegedly murdered by two friends near Achankulam in Coimbatore following an argument during a drinking session. One accused has been arrested while another remains absconding.

Coimbatore:

A murder reported near Achankulam under the limits of Neelambur Police Station in Coimbatore has created concern among residents after a man was found dead with severe injuries.

The deceased was identified as Saravanan (41), a native of Jayankondam in Ariyalur district. Police said he was allegedly murdered by two of his friends, identified as Harish and Gokul, following an argument while consuming liquor.

According to police, the incident came to light on May 18 around 8 am when a couple who had gone fishing near Achankulam the previous night returned to retrieve their fishing net. They found the body of an unidentified man lying naked with bleeding injuries on his face, head and legs on revenue land near Kappini Thottam.

The information was immediately passed on to Neelambur Village Assistant Balamurali, following which Village Administrative Officer Durga lodged a complaint with the police. Based on the complaint, Neelambur Police registered a murder case and launched an investigation.

During inquiries, eyewitnesses informed police that around 8.45 pm on May 17, they had noticed three men arriving on a two-wheeler and arguing loudly near the location while they were fishing nearby. When questioned using a torchlight, the trio reportedly told them they were discussing a family issue, after which the eyewitnesses left the area.

As the investigation progressed, Gokul (25) surrendered before Neelambur Police on Sunday evening.

During interrogation, police learnt that all three were employed at a private cylinder manufacturing company in AG Puthur. Police suspect the trio had gone to the isolated location to consume alcohol when an argument broke out, leading to Saravanan being attacked with stones and murdered.

After the incident, the accused allegedly fled from the spot. Gokul has been remanded in judicial custody, while police teams are continuing efforts to trace absconding accused Harish. Further investigation is under way.
