Thunderstorms Likely in Coimbatore Over Next 7 Days

Coimbatore is expected to witness cloudy skies, breezy afternoons and localized thunderstorms over the next seven days, with temperatures ranging between 32°C and 35°C and evening rain chances increasing across the district.

Coimbatore: Coimbatore district is likely to experience a mix of cloudy skies, breezy afternoons and localized thunderstorms over the next seven days, according to the latest weather forecasts and radar observations. Temperatures are expected to remain between 32°C and 35°C, while rain chances are set to increase gradually across the region.

Weather models indicate that the district will continue to witness typical pre-monsoon conditions, with hot mornings followed by cloud formation during the afternoon hours. Several parts of the city are expected to receive short-duration thunderstorms, particularly between 3 PM and 7 PM over the coming days.

From May 21 onward, thunderstorm activity is expected to become more frequent. Forecasts suggest that isolated showers accompanied by gusty winds and lightning may occur in parts of Coimbatore district during evening hours. However, rainfall is likely to remain localized, with some areas receiving rain while nearby localities may stay dry.

Meteorological observations indicate that the current weather pattern is being influenced by moisture inflow through the Palakkad Gap combined with rising daytime temperatures across western Tamil Nadu. The interaction of moisture and heat is leading to atmospheric instability and convective cloud formation near the Western Ghats.

Afternoon breezes are also expected across the district during the forecast period, providing temporary relief from daytime heat. Despite intermittent rainfall activity, temperatures are likely to remain above normal in several areas, especially during late morning and early afternoon hours.

Weather forecasts further indicate that May 25 could witness slightly wetter conditions with increased cloud cover and light rain activity in some locations. Towards May 26–28, temperatures may rise marginally again, although scattered thunderstorms are expected to continue in isolated pockets.

Experts state that the district is currently under a pre-monsoon convective weather pattern, which is common during this time of the year in western Tamil Nadu. Such conditions are generally characterised by intense daytime heating, rapid cloud development and sudden evening thunderstorms.

Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorm activity, especially in open areas during lightning and gusty winds. People are also advised to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to afternoon heat over the next few days.
