Vigilant Coimbatore Prison Officials Thwart Attempt to Smuggle Ganja in Snacks; 4 Booked

A bid to smuggle ganja into Coimbatore Central Prison by concealing it inside snack packets has created a stir. Police have registered a case against four persons, including three prison inmates, under the NDPS Act and Prison Act.


Coimbatore: A case has been registered against four persons, including three inmates lodged at Coimbatore Central Prison, after prison officials allegedly found 6.24 grams of ganja hidden inside snack packets brought for the prisoners.

According to police, the case was registered at the Race Course Police Station under Crime No. 168/26 under Sections 8(c) r/w 20(b)(ii)(A) of the NDPS Act and Section 42 of the Prison Act.

The accused have been identified as Mahendran (26);Surendran (22), Abivishnu (27); and Navin, from Chinna Thadagam, Coimbatore.

Prison officials stated that Navin had submitted a petition to meet the inmates at Coimbatore Central Prison on May 12. During the visit, he handed over snack items, including Varkey packets, to prison guards for delivery to inmate Mahesh @ Maheshwaran.

During routine inspection at the prison’s visitors hall frisking room, officials found about 6.24 grams of ganja concealed inside the snack packets.

Based on a complaint lodged by Prison Jailer Thirumalai, the Race Course police registered a case and launched further investigation into the incident.
