Coimbatore Man Dies at Sacred Velliangiri Hills

A 32-year-old man from Madukkarai area in Coimbatore died at the fourth hill of Velliangiri. Forest officials recovered the body and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death during the pilgrimage season.


Coimbatore: A tragic incident occurred at the Velliangiri Hills, popularly known as the Southern Kailash, when a devotee lost his life during his pilgrimage to the Velliangiri Andavar Temple in Poondi.

Mayilsamy (32), a resident of Madukkarai area in Coimbatore, was found dead at the fourth hill of the Velliangiri mountain range. The incident came to light when other pilgrims noticed the body and alerted the authorities.


The Velliangiri Andavar Temple, which had been opened to devotees since February 1, has been witnessing thousands of pilgrims visiting daily to offer prayers at this revered shrine. The temple, situated atop the Velliangiri Hills, attracts devotees who undertake the challenging trek through the seven hills to reach the sanctum.

Forest department officials were immediately notified about the incident and rushed to the spot. They successfully retrieved Mayilsamy's body from the fourth hill and have launched an investigation into the circumstances that led to his death.


Authorities are examining whether the death was caused by health complications during the strenuous climb, extreme weather conditions, or any other factors. The exact cause of death will be determined after post-mortem examination.

The Velliangiri pilgrimage season, which typically runs from January to May, sees lakhs of devotees undertaking the arduous journey. Officials have been repeatedly advising pilgrims to ensure they are physically fit before attempting the climb and to carry adequate water and necessary medications.
