Congress Backed TVK to Safeguard Tamil Nadu’s Secular Fabric: Congress Legislature Party Leader Se. Rajeshkumar

Rejecting allegations of political opportunism, Congress Legislature Party Leader Se. Rajeshkumar said the party’s support to TVK was aimed at protecting Tamil Nadu’s secular values and preventing communal forces from gaining ground in the state.

Chennai: Amid criticism over the Congress party extending support to the Tamil Nadu Victory Kazhagam (TVK) following the Tamil Nadu Assembly election results, Congress Legislature Party Leader Mr. Se. Rajeshkumar MLA has issued a clarification defending the party’s decision.

In a statement, Rajeshkumar rejected allegations that the support was extended out of a desire for power or in betrayal of the people of Tamil Nadu. He said such accusations were completely baseless and politically motivated.

He pointed out that even before the election announcement, Congress had received several political overtures from different quarters. However, the party remained committed to travelling with the INDIA alliance against communal forces. He also noted that Congress workers had worked tirelessly on the ground to ensure the victory of the secular progressive alliance in the previous Assembly elections.

Stating that democracy sometimes produces unexpected electoral outcomes, Rajeshkumar said the Congress had taken the decision by respecting the democratic verdict and the prevailing mood of the people of Tamil Nadu, while keeping the future welfare of the state in mind.

Explaining the rationale behind supporting TVK, he said the party had consistently projected itself as a secular movement. He further noted that TVK leader Vijay had publicly declared former Chief Minister K. Kamarajar as his ideological guide and had committed himself to the path of social justice championed by the late leader.

Rajeshkumar said the Congress believed supporting a movement that embraced Kamarajar’s ideals and social justice principles would strengthen secular values in Tamil Nadu. He reiterated that the Congress remained firmly opposed to the RSS and communal forces gaining any foothold in the state.

He further stressed that all secular forces should unite to ensure a strong secular government in Tamil Nadu and maintained that allegations of betrayal against the people were entirely unfounded.

The Congress leader added that the decision was made considering the welfare of the people and the peace of the state, emphasizing that isolating communal forces had become the need of the hour. He affirmed that the Congress party would continue its political journey against communalism and in support of social justice and the sentiments of the people of Tamil Nadu.
