Coimbatore: The Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore, President Rajesh Lund said, The Chamber notes the Court’s concern that National Highways accounts for a disproportionately high number of fatalities and appreciates its emphasis that expressways must not become “corridors of peril.” The directives, including the ban on parking of heavy vehicles on Highways, implementation of Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS), and identification of accident prone blackspots, are timely and essential.

The Chamber also values the Court’s reiteration of the Right to Life under Article 21, placing responsibility on authorities to ensure safe road conditions. The constitution of District Highway Safety Task Forces and strict enforcement timelines reflect the urgency of the issue.
The direction to remove unauthorised roadside dhabas, eateries, and commercial establishments within highway safety zones is a significant step towards reducing accidents caused by unsafe roadside activities.
While welcoming these measures, the Chamber emphasises the need for effective and time bound implementation by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, National Highways Authority of India, and State authorities.
