Pharmacy Student Dies During Velliangiri Hills Trek After Suffering Chest Pain

A 23-year-old Pharm-D student from Coimbatore collapsed and died while trekking Velliangiri Hills with friends. Mukesh Kumar suffered sudden chest pain at the fifth hill around 2 AM, with no immediate medical assistance available at the remote location.

Coimbatore: A tragic incident occurred during an early morning trek at Velliangiri Hills when a 23-year-old pharmacy student lost his life due to sudden chest pain. Mukesh Kumar, a Pharm-D student, was trekking with a group of eight friends when the unfortunate incident took place around 2 AM near the fifth hill of the pilgrimage route.

According to sources, Mukesh Kumar and his friends had begun their trek during the night hours, a common practice among young trekkers who prefer to complete the journey during cooler temperatures. The group had successfully reached the fifth hill when Mukesh suddenly complained of severe chest pain and collapsed.

Despite the presence of his friends, no immediate medical help was available at the remote location. The lack of accessible medical facilities in the hilly terrain proved fatal, and Mukesh Kumar died on the spot. His shocked friends immediately alerted authorities about the tragedy.

A rescue team was subsequently deployed to retrieve the body from the hills. The team faced challenges navigating the steep terrain during the early morning hours but successfully brought down Mukesh Kumar's body for post-mortem examination.

This incident has raised serious safety concerns about trekking activities at Velliangiri Hills, particularly during night hours when medical emergencies become more difficult to handle. The absence of emergency medical services along the trekking route has become a point of discussion among regular trekkers and safety advocates.

Velliangiri Hills, also known as the Saptha Malai (Seven Hills), is a popular trekking and pilgrimage destination in Coimbatore district. Thousands of devotees and adventure enthusiasts undertake this challenging trek, especially during the Mahashivratri season.

The tragic death of the young student has left his family, friends, and the college community in mourning. Authorities are expected to review safety protocols and consider implementing better emergency response mechanisms along the trekking route to prevent such incidents in the future.
