Ganga Hospital’s Plastic Surgery Department in Coimbatore has hosted over 3,500 surgeons from 89 countries as of March 2026, marking a major milestone in global surgical education.

Coimbatore:

Ganga Hospital in Coimbatore has achieved a major milestone in global surgical education, with its Department of Plastic, Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery hosting over 3,534 surgeons from 89 countries and 166 Indian cities as of March 2026.

The hospital, known for its expertise in plastic surgery, complex hand surgery, microsurgery and burns care, has emerged as one of the most visited surgical training centres globally. Surgeons from across the world continue to visit the institution to gain hands-on experience and exposure to high-volume and diverse surgical procedures.

Dr S. Raja Sabapathy, Chairman of Ganga Hospital and Head of the Department, stated that the steady growth in visiting surgeons reflects the institution’s long-standing commitment to education and clinical excellence. What began as a small number of visitors in the early 1990s has grown into a consistent inflow of more than 150 surgeons annually, with 182 visitors recorded in 2026 alone.

Over the past three decades, the hospital has evolved from a regional centre into an international reference point for surgical training. Surgeons are drawn by the hospital’s ability to deliver high-quality care at affordable cost, along with its wide spectrum of complex surgical cases.

The institution also witnessed a strong post-pandemic recovery in international participation. The department recorded 234 visiting surgeons in 2023 and 223 in 2024, indicating sustained global demand for specialised training.

The United Kingdom and the United States accounted for a significant share of international visitors, with 272 and 139 surgeons respectively. Experts noted that the presence of surgeons from leading global institutions has enabled a two-way exchange of knowledge, strengthening both learning and clinical practices.

The department’s week-long microsurgery laboratory course is considered among the leading training programmes globally. With a capacity to train four surgeons at a time, nearly 2,000 surgeons have completed the programme so far.

Consultants at the hospital highlighted that continuous advancements in subspecialties such as burns, diabetic foot surgery, breast and cancer reconstruction have contributed to its global recognition. The department continues to focus on process-driven excellence and expanding its capabilities in complex trauma and reconstructive surgery.

With its growing international engagement and emphasis on training, Ganga Hospital has positioned itself as a key centre influencing surgical practices worldwide.
