Three Dead, Nine Critically Injured in Firecracker Manufacturing Explosion in Tirupur

A tragic explosion occurred in Tirupur's Pandiyan Nagar while manufacturing firecrackers for temple festivals, resulting in three deaths and nine injuries. The incident also damaged over ten houses in the residential area.

Tirupur: A devastating explosion at a makeshift firecracker manufacturing unit in Tirupur's Pandiyan Nagar, Sathya Colony, Ponnammal Nagar area has claimed three lives and left nine others critically injured. The incident, which occurred on Thursday, has also caused extensive damage to more than ten houses in the vicinity.

The explosion took place at the residence of Karthik, who lives with his wife Sathyapriya in Pandiyan Nagar. Sathyapriya's brother, who owns a firecracker shop in Nambiyur, Erode district, had been manufacturing firecrackers at Karthik's house due to high demand during the festival season. The manufacturing was reportedly carried out without proper permissions in a densely populated residential area.

During the manufacturing process, a sudden explosion of country-made explosives occurred, resulting in the death of an unidentified person whose body was scattered within a 100-meter radius.

The front portion of Karthik's house collapsed, and a nearby grocery store was completely destroyed.

Additionally, 20 tiled houses in the opposite direction suffered severe damage, with tiles shattering due to the impact.

The Thirumurugan Poondi police rushed to the scene upon receiving information and rescued the injured, admitting them to nearby private hospitals.

Due to the presence of unexploded materials scattered around, police set up barricades to prevent public entry and ensure safety.

The explosion claimed the lives of three individuals, including an unidentified woman, a 9-month-old baby named Aaliya Sherrin, and Kumar, who succumbed to injuries during treatment. Nine others, including three children, are currently undergoing treatment, with two in critical condition.

Tirupur District Collector Christuraj and City Police Commissioner Lakshmi visited the site, instructing officials to douse the unexploded materials with water. Rescue operations are ongoing, and authorities have stated that action will be taken regarding the unauthorized manufacturing of firecrackers in a residential area and the storage of explosives.

In a related development, police have arrested two individuals, Karthik (the house owner) and Saravanakumar (who was involved in collecting and storing the explosive materials), in connection with the incident. Authorities have also seized 50 kilograms of unexploded materials from the site.

Additionally, four dogs trapped inside the house during the explosion were rescued by members of the Sulochana Dog Shelter and safely relocated to the shelter.
