Coimbatore: A retired teacher and his wife had a close call when their car suddenly burst into flames in Udumalaipet, Tiruppur district. The incident occurred on Sunday as the couple was returning from church.

Williams, a retired teacher residing in Sadiq Nagar near Udumalaipet, and his wife were driving back home in their Maruti Ciaz after attending church services. As they approached the Tiruppur Road junction, smoke suddenly started emanating from the engine compartment.

Due to heavy traffic on the main road, Williams quickly steered the vehicle to a less crowded area nearby. The couple managed to exit the car just in time before the fire spread rapidly. Within moments, the engine was engulfed in flames, and the fire soon consumed the entire interior of the vehicle.

The Fire and Rescue Services were immediately alerted. Upon arrival, the firefighters swiftly brought the blaze under control. However, by then, the car's interior and engine compartment had been completely destroyed by the fire.

The Udumalaipet Police have registered a case and are investigating the incident. It was revealed that the couple had purchased this luxury car only two months ago. The sight of a new car going up in flames caused quite a stir in the locality.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined, and authorities are looking into whether it was due to a manufacturing defect or other factors.
