TNAU Sets World Record in Seed Ball Preparation Event

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in Coimbatore organized a mega seed ball preparation event on September 28, 2024, where over 1000 students and staff created more than 15,000 seed balls, setting a world record.


Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) in Coimbatore organized a mega seed ball preparation event on September 28, 2024, setting a new world record. The event, held at the Agricultural Engineering College and Research Institute (AEC&RI), saw the participation of around 1000 students and staff who collectively prepared over 15,000 seed balls.

The seed balls were made using a 2:1 ratio of red soil and vermicompost. Seeds of various tree species including Cassia tree, Custard apple, Silk cotton, Indian Siris, Neem, Pacific Rosewood, and Rain tree were selected for the initiative.



Dr. A. Raviraj, in his welcome address, highlighted TNAU's various environmental rejuvenation activities. He mentioned the university's contribution to creating a grand Freedom Forest and planting 6.5 lakh trees in Dindigul district, which earned a place in the Elite World Records under the leadership of TNAU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. V. Geethalakshmi.

Prof. Dr. V. Geethalakshmi, who presided over the mega event, emphasized that this massive seed ball preparation initiative would raise awareness about environmental protection and conservation. She explained how trees contribute to mitigating climate change and how these efforts would lead to dense forests in the future, providing shelter to various species.



The Vice-Chancellor also distributed prizes to the winners of the seed ball preparation competition. The mega event was jointly organized by TNAU's Seed Centre, Eco Club, MasonAGE Club, Food Club, Rotaract Club, NSS, and International Vasavi 5* KCGF International, Coimbatore.

TNAU scientists and students enthusiastically participated in the preparation of one crore seed balls, an event organized by the International Vasavi Club, contributing to this world record-setting achievement.
